WHAT IS A COUNTER CURRENT DAF?

The AJM EnviroDAF™ is designed with a unique Counter Current Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system to help overcome some of the problems encountered with traditional older style Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems. This counter current system offers a total solution to the common problem of sludge carryover under high or irregular loadings, without the need for operator intervention.

As can be seen from the following diagram, with the older traditional system, sludge is moved to the outlet or discharge end of the DAF tank by the scraper system. Thus, at times when the sludge removal rate is less than the sludge production rate, the sludge will build up at the outlet end resulting in the common problem of carry over and contamination of the treated water.

A traditional co-current Dissolved Air Flotation Unit

The AJM EnviroDAF™ system design causes the sludge to be scraped to the inlet end of the DAF tank. Thus as the sludge in the DAF tank starts to build up the incoming air saturated recycle stream works with (and not against, as with the old style DAF systems) the scraper mechanism to elevate the sludge and automatically remove it at a higher rate.

As can be clearly seen, the sludge is constantly moved away from the outlet end of the AJM EnviroDAF™ thus preventing any carry through of sludge into the discharge.

Other advantages include:

  • Sludge blanket has a constant lift of air bubbles under it at the beach removal end giving additional dewatering

  • Agitation of the sludge blanket by scrapers at the beach end can cause bubble detachment and so sinking flocs. In a co-current DAF these sinking flocs would be lost to the outlet of the DAF. In the counter current the air bubbles rising under the blanket will recapture those flocs.

  • This additional lift of the sludge blanket and "second bite" at the air bubbles does not require the recycle injection points all down the DAF that some co-current models use, creating unwanted turbulence in the dissolved air flotation tank.

  • At shutdown and in the delay stop period of the DAF operation, the sludge blanket at the beach is continuously lifted with air bubbles - so helping the DAF surface to be wiped clean for shutdown. This is opposed to the co-current system in which the sludge blanket remaining after shutdown often suffers bubble detachment and sinks between duty cycles.
